📰 Makai Ortiz-Gray is the BAL’s only genius while league stars remain frauds
September 26, 2026
Nobody wants to say it, but the BAL is suffering from a massive case of collective amnesia when it comes to Makai Ortiz-Gray. While the league drools over the stat-stuffing numbers of Ty Burton or the rebounding totals of Ethan Benne, Ortiz-Gray is putting together the most surgical offensive campaign in league history. Averaging 23.1 PPG with elite efficiency, he’s doing more with less while his peers hog the ball. Let’s be real: watching Ortiz-Gray dismantle defenses is an art form, yet he remains the most underrated commodity in the entire organization.
It’s time to stop giving passes to the so-called “stars” who pad their resumes with empty volume. Look at Jared Kumah; he’s pulling down boards, sure, but his impact on winning pales in comparison to the gravity Makai creates. Meanwhile, the Bullies are in serious trouble and everyone knows it—they are wasting Kumah’s prime on a roster that lacks any real identity. This is embarrassing for a team with those expectations, and frankly, someone on that roster needs to step up or step aside before they turn into a total laughingstock.
If you’re still putting guys like Jeff Espinal in the same conversation as Ortiz-Gray, you clearly aren't watching the games. Espinal is a role player masquerading as a focal point, and the 8 Balls have been lucky to skate by on reputation alone. Makai Ortiz-Gray doesn't just play; he dictates the flow of every contest he steps into. If you aren't crowning him as the most vital player in this league, you’re just biased, blind, or both. The season is nearing its climax, and while others are wilting under the pressure, Ortiz-Gray is the only one playing at a legendary level.
